PEOPLES' CHOICE AWARD co-winner with Tim Roberts etching "Nevermore"

Kate Hoffman Art Association's 2008 Juried Show presented top awards to mother/daughter artists Bettye Cook and Lindy Cook Severns.  Although both women have pursued art all their lives, the Fort Davis, Texas show marked their first ever exhibiting together.

Bettye, long a cartoonist and commercial artist,  became a watercolorist only a few years ago.  Daughter Lindy paints professionally in pastels and in oils. They share a love for color , whatever the medium.

Lindy Severns took Best of Show for her Davis Mountain landscape "Windswept Color".  Bettye Cook won first place in each of three divisions; Lindy placed second to her mom in Landscape with a pastel miniature, and shared the People's Choice award with fellow Big Bend artist Tim Robbins.

"Will they let us come back next year?" Bettye asked her proud daughter, after almost sweeping the show.

Like most special paintings, all of these have their stories.  Some stories are more special than others.

"Picnic Paradise" is a favorite multi-generational Cook/Severns/Nammour family escape in the Canadian Rockies (we think this qualifies as painting the Far West on an international level.) Bettye's painting, full of memories, is also a loving tribute to Lindy's dad.

"Windswept Color" comes from Lindy's neighborhood. This particular summer day, color had just begun to paint the Texas Mountain's Scenic Loop. Rains had recently followed a disatrous wildfire which burned nearly 60,000 acres, and anything in the landscape brighter than black shone like a rainbow. Visiting young cousin Dylan Hernandez displayed extreme patience while the artist captured this scene.

"Goat Herder's Gift to the Wedding" is Bettye's portrait of a peasant musician who serenaded her oldest grandson's wedding party as they paraded, enroute to the church, through a Lebanese mountain village.
