Northeastern New Mexico provides many of Lindy's favorite subjects. Running water is scarce back home in the high desert of Big Bend country;  Lindy Severns paints it on frequent travels to this part of the Rockies.

Lindy says, "This section of the rio down Taos Mountain from the Ski Valley is so rugged, you have to wonder how anyone conceived a public road there. There wasn't much room to park on the winding, narrow two lane road, but a score of us hardy pastelists followed Albert Handell up there to paint one June afternoon.  (Albert, my long-time teacher, now advisor insisted the light was too special to miss.)
"We spread out so far apart, I couldn't see any of the others at their easels. That was the only way we could keep from being run down by motorists, though.  As it was, I perched midway down a steep bank. I had to hold onto my easel with my left hand to keep it from falling into the rushing water. The bugs were a story unto themselves. Bugs love water only second to their love for plein air painters.
"Then came the ashes, follwed by dense smoke. A forest fire blazed just across the highway to Questa, and the wind carried floating ashes onto my canvas. Then, it started getting dark on me. I can't say it was a relaxing afternoon, but I finished this painting.

"I guess it was all in a day's work."
