SIERRA del CARMEN LIGHT
a 24" x 36" pastel by Lindy Cook Severns
soft pastel on Kitty Wallis museum grade pastel paper
private collection
Large, detailed pastels are relatively rare, a breed alone. Lindy Severns shares step-by-step commentary on this intricate pastel painting of the Big Bend.
"I pride myself on representing authentic landmarks in my paintings," Severns says. "I also paint ground my husband and I have either hiked or known intimately. So not only the distant Sierra del Carmens across the Rio Grande in Mexico, but the sharp pebbles, the treacherous lechiguilla with its hypodermic spines, the thin, welcome shadows reflect a reality I've experienced. As I composed this piece, I imagined myself guiding a newcomer into this landscape. 'Watch out!' I caution. 'Rest in this shade. It won't last.' This is land I love. "
Notecards and affordable, frame-worthy oversized greeting cards of this painting are available in the studio store.
